Wordpress Improvement and Tag Clouds

Wordpress Wishlist: I’d like the ability for categories to be bound up as synonyms. I want this because categories are dual-purpose – when applied to an article they’re like tags or keywords, but when they appear as navigation elements they’re more like folder names. For example, “mushrooms” and “mycology” are reasonable tags to apply to an article (modulo stemming), but having both of them in the left-navigation is confusing.

This neat variation on the rapidly-becoming-standard tag cloud interface might be an interesting starting point (via del.icio.us/popular)

(Update, 2008 – Wordpress 2.5.1 has categories (which can be organised into a tree) and tags).

I’m really impressed by the ease with which you can switch themes in Wordpress. Our current project at work is shaping up to be pretty neat (and if we get to do follow-on development, I think it could be great), but themes are one of the areas that really let it down (non-essential stuff inevitably gets pushed down the roadmap when the main priority is shipping). The Wordpress model is definitely one to shoot for.

Apropos not much: A cool analogy (I discovered one of these in my town – it’s been gone 85 years, but the scars are still there. I’ll write it up someday).
